This was the first thing I drew after discovering that "laug auf" meant "eyes open."

It's based on a mind's eye, and everything it sees is the life waiting for you once you look up from the screen. A snow-capped peak for skiing and snowboarding. Green forest below for hiking and camping. At the center, the sun, drawn as a power button, glowing red because it's OFF. Rays of sunlight splashing on waves for water sports.

Laug Auf. Life On. Like everything else in this brand, that one came from a conversation, a collaboration. Another friend, Danny, said it and, like Picasso said, "good artists borrow, great artists steal," so I stole it. Furthermore, in the spirit of Jean Cocteau, who said "an original artist is unable to copy, so [s]he has only to copy in order to be original," I riffed on it, making the acronym L.A.L.O., pronounced "lay low," as in take it easy, give it time, play the slow game.

But my favorite part of this drawing isn't mine at all.

As I was drawing at the breakfast table, my son Orion, nine and skateboard-obsessed, walked over, grabbed a pastel pencil, leaned in and drew two lines, one on each side of the lower eyelid, beneath the power button. He colored over the blue sky in that area with grey, then drew a tiny dot on the inside of both lines.

"Hey bud, what are you doing? I'm working here."
"Dad, that's a half-pipe. The grey parts are the decks and the dots are the coping."
"Cool idea, Buster," I said with a smile.

I made some tweaks on the next and final version.
When I was finished, Orion took a look at it.
He peered up at me, with his signature raised eyebrow.
"Where's the coping?"
"Oh, that was cute, Bud, but I'm not gonna use it."
Without missing a beat, matter-of-factly: "If you don't use it, I'll never wear the clothes."
Instantly, the deck and coping became my favorite part.
That's why the graphic is called copiAUs.
Copious laughter, copious love and copiAUs opportunity on the other side of the screen.
